The small town of Turre is located in the foothills of the Sierra Cabrera in the valley of the Rio Aguas. Dating back to the times of the Moors today’s Turre is a bustling little market town.
The labyrinth of streets in the old town are dotted with tapas bars and in the main square the natural fountain supplies drinking water to visitors all year round while the main thoroughfares offer a variety of shops, bars and restaurants that cater for all tastes and ages. Friday’s are market days when local produce, amongst other items, is abundantly available.
The parish church, Iglesia de la Purisíma Concepción dates from the mid to late1800s and the Hermitage de San Francisco de Assisi dates from the 16th century. The latter was built after the remaining Moors, who were refugees from Mojácar and other nearby villages, converted to Christianity. Those that did not convert were sold into slavery. There are several fiestas that commemorate Turre’s past when the town is alive with lights, music and dance.

There are a host of places to explore in the area and the nearest beach is only 8 kms away. Dotted with small pensions and hostals in and around the town Turre is a great little Spanish hideaway where one can enjoy local cusine in a relaxed Mediterrranean atmosphere. Moving up into the Sierra Cabrera one can find the Cortijo Grande Golf course Cortijo Grande Golf.
Climbing higher still you find the architecturally stunning Cortijo Cabrera. Built on the site of the old village one can still see archaeological remains of the original settlement and also of the sister village, Teresa, nearby. There is evidence found in nearby caves of occupation during Neolithic times but the first settlement of the area started in about the 8th century. The breathtaking views and jewel like turrets of today’s urbanised area, which has been built to emulate the Moorish style, are truly a spectacle not to be missed. Once bitten, forever smitten.
This verdant 9 hole golf course nestles in the foothills of the Sierra Cabrera which offers a dramatic background and magnificent views. Flanked by groves of orange & olive trees and watered by an underground volcanic lake this picturesque location has been popular for many years. Although there are only 9 holes there are 18 tees.
